My husband has a great love of foxes and constantly proclaims them as his favorite animal.  I made this for him as a Valentine's present.  He's the one who first told me about the kitsune of Japanese folklore and Shinto religion.  The kitsune were fox spirits in the service of the Goddess Inari.  It was believed their wisdom and magical ability only increased with age, as signified by their number of tails which range from one to nine.  One of the most common of magical abilities was the power to take human form.  It was common for the kitsune to take the form of beautiful women in order to play tricks on wayward travelers or terrorize wicked men.  It was also said that if you experience a rain shower without a cloud in the sky, you are actually in the presence of a kitsune wedding.

The image of a kitsune fox-maiden falling in love with a mortal and choosing to give up her mortality as her fox-sisters help her prepare for the ceremony suddenly came to me, in a story similar to the tales of the selkies of Scottish folklore.
